MICHAEL STECKY

Stecky’s current series of paintings focus on the collection and intervention of vintage, found paint by number paintings of animals.

 

Using paint stripper and a blow torch to reanimate the paint into flowing contortions, familiar stock portraits of dogs and deer dissolve under layers of powder pigments, resins, applied mesh and Swarovski crystal elements.

 

Stecky arrives at an intersection between pathos and nostalgia for the natural world. Sliding below the layers of accrued history the images of the animals also slide into abstraction.
